The 7 Concepts
1. System 1 and System 2
The brain operates via two systems:
- System 1 — fast, automatic, intuitive, reptilian. Makes snap “good enough” judgments with minimal energy.
- System 2 — slow, deliberate, analytical. Activated for complex reasoning, but lazy — defaults to System 1 whenever possible.
Classic illustration: the bat-and-ball problem. “A bat and ball cost 1 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?” System 1 answers 0.05.
This dual-process model is the organizing framework for the entire book. Most cognitive biases documented by Kahneman are System 1 errors — fast heuristics that misfire in modern environments.

2. Cognitive Ease
The brain prefers familiar, simple, easily-processed stimuli. This is cognitive-ease — a state of comfort the brain seeks to maintain, because familiarity historically signaled safety.
Key implications:
- Fluent, easy-to-read text is judged as more truthful
- Repeated exposure makes claims feel more credible (“illusory truth effect”)
- Simple fonts, clear layouts, and familiar names reduce cognitive friction
Kahneman’s observation: “A reliable way to make people believe in falsehoods is frequent repetition, because familiarity is not easily distinguished from truth.”
This has enormous implications for marketing, persuasion, UX, and propaganda alike.
3. Question Substitution
When faced with a difficult question, System 1 silently swaps it for an easier one and answers that instead — without flagging the substitution.
Examples from the source:
- “How happy are you with your life?” → answered as “What’s my current mood?”
- “How much should I donate?” → answered as “How much did I donate last time?”
- “Is this politician competent?” → answered as “Does this politician look competent?”
4. WYSIATI (What You See Is All There Is)
We form confident conclusions based on the information immediately available, without adequately accounting for what we don’t know. The mind doesn’t flag its own blind spots.
Kahneman’s term: wysiati. The story the brain constructs from available evidence feels complete and coherent — even when it’s built on a tiny fraction of the relevant data.
Real-world manifestation: political polarization. People consume only confirming information until they can no longer conceive of contrary evidence existing.
From a marketer’s view: if your brand is consistently present when a buyer is researching your category, WYSIATI works for you — you become the story they tell themselves.
5. Framing and Choice Architecture
Identical information presented differently produces different decisions. The classic example from this source: “10% chance of dying” vs. “90% survival rate” — mathematically identical, emotionally very different.

The choice architecture angle connects to nudge-theory: by designing the environment in which choices are made, you can systematically shift decisions without restricting options.
6. Base Rate Neglect
When evaluating the likelihood of something, we systematically underweight statistical base rates (prior probabilities) and overweight the “representativeness” of a description.
Classic examples:
- Librarian or farmer? Steve is shy, detail-oriented, loves order. Most people guess librarian — but there are far more farmers than librarians, so the base-rate-correct answer is farmer.
- Conjunction fallacy: “John is an athletic advocate of LGBTQ rights. Is he (a) a basketball player, or (b) a basketball player who is gay?” Most pick (b), violating basic probability (a subset can’t be more likely than its superset).

7. Sunk Cost Fallacy
We continue investing in failing projects because of what we’ve already put in, even when the rational move is to cut losses. See sunk-cost-fallacy.
The sunk cost is by definition unrecoverable — it should be irrelevant to future decisions. But System 1 experiences abandonment as a loss (see loss-aversion), making the irrational continuation feel necessary.
